My Freshman Year and Ethnography 9/9/13
These two readings had many similarities and differences. In My Freshman Year it was through the eyes of of an ethnographer and the second reading the author explained what the study of ethnography is. I thought in My Freshman Year that of her going back to school defeated the purpose of her getting the first year of college experience because of how old she was. Also because of her age no one would really treat her the same and she couldn't really interact with the other students. I also liked how she compared the freshman class at her university to the village she observed and how she found similarities in behaviors. Just like how the author of My Freshman Year found similarities between the freshman class and the villagers, the author of Ethnography mentioned that they noticed common habits in many different cultures. Differences between the two readings is that the second reading explained what an ethnographer is and what they studied. I liked the first reading better because it gave me a better understanding of what ethnography is. I did like that the author gave examples of the language, literacy, and multimodalities. Overall I really enjoyed the first reading better than the second one.
